We met at Chedoke Church at 11 a.m. Bob drove us to the bottom of Syndeham Road in Dundas, dropped off 5 of us and then he drove Jackie to the top of the Syndeham Rd. to the Look Out. Lucky her :-) It was a steep climb up but WOW!!! the view from the Look-Out was awesome - great views of Hamilton and Dundas. This was one of the most beautiful hikes so far. We were on the edge of the escarpment for much of the hike - amazing views and amazing fall colors! Enjoy our pictures!
Rock Chapel, a 72-hectare nature sanctuary located on the Flamborough-Dundas municipal boundary along the Niagara Escarpment, is part of the Niagara Escarpment UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. This south-facing forested habitat features Borer’s Falls and the escarpment valley. The escarpment and its wooded areas are home to a diverse range of rare and uncommon plants and birds. The escarpment edge supports a rare eastern white cedar old growth forest community. - See more at: http://rbg.geotrail.ca/activities/30#sthash.YOgVs4xs.dpuf
We passed 378 Rock Chapel Road, which is the Averill House, built on the property originally granted to Moses Morden, brother-in-law of Ann Durham Morden, the founder of Dundas. Moses built a sawmill near here that operated for over one hundred and forty years. The mill was later bought by John Borer, after whom the falls were named. Borer was born in Kent, England, in 1824 and emigrated to Upper Canada in 1852 with a wife and four children. He moved here in 1865 from Mountsberg, a few miles north. The road goes over a bridge across the Rock Chapel Creek. About fifteen metres to the left of the bridge, the creek goes over Borer's Falls. On the left, in the brush just past the bridge, was once a sawmill powered by the creek. The mill was built about 1798 by Moses Morden.
